Martyrdom: The Only Way a Man Can Become Famous Without Ability

George Bernard Shaw provided today's title, so apt when it comes to Ted Cruz.

Texas' toxic senator is wildly popular with Tea Party-types. He's wildly unpopular with the rest of us. Even the Houston Chronicle--his hometown newspaper--has come to its senses and published its regret about the endorsement it gave Cruz in the 2012 general election to replace the retired Texas Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison.

The editorial blasted the rookie senator for exacerbating Washington's "chaotic, hyper-partisan atmosphere" and was entitled, "Why we miss Kay Bailey Hutchison":

One reason we particularly believe that Hutchison would make a difference in these hectic days is that if she had kept her seat, Cruz would not be in the Senate.

When we endorsed Ted Cruz in last November's general election, we did so with many reservations and at least one specific recommendation - that he follow Hutchison's example in his conduct as a senator.

Obviously, he has not done so. Cruz has been part of the problem in specific situations where Hutchison would have been part of the solution.

We feel certain she would have worked shoulder to shoulder with Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in crafting a workable solution that likely would have avoided the government shutdown altogether.

But we'll never know.

One thing I know: we can count on the conservative media--that cavernous bubble of babble, outrage, faux-Constitutionalism and fake patriotism--to further envelope Cruz in its constantly-aggrieved bosom and lash out yet again at the "Lamestream Media". Count on the Drudge/Breitbart/Fox "News" wing of the Nutbag-O-Sphere to martyr the Texas Troglodyte while more sober members of the Grand Old Party scramble to save it from its self-guided implosion.
