Redondo Beach Hosts Big Blue Whale Bash

The Redondo Beach Marina and local marine organizations celebrate the blue whale.

Hundreds of people milled through the Redondo Beach Marina during the first annual Big Blue Whale Bash on Sunday afternoon.

The event, organized to raise awareness of the earth's largest mammals, featured demonstrations and exhibits about blue whales and their relatives, an arts and crafts booth for children and a life-size inflatable blue whale.

The Voyager also offered discounted whale-watching trips for the afternoon, while a group of local students taught people about the vaquita, the world's most endangered mammal.

Organizer Diane Alps of the American Cetacean Society's Los Angeles Chapter, heralded the event as a success, telling Patch that she thought the event was successful in raising awareness about blue whales and boating safety around them.
