Thousands of people on Oct. 27 this year are expected to walk 3.4 miles from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Hermosa Beach Pier and back as part of the fifth annual Pier to Pier Friendship Walk.

Television network Nickelodeon will sponsor the footwear company's fifth annual walk to benefit children and young adults with special needs, as well as local school districts, Skechers USA Inc. announced in a news release.

Last year, the event raised $45,000 for the Redondo Beach Educational Foundation.

According to Skechers, the event since its inception in 2009 has garnered $1.9 million in funds for education programs and the The Friendship Circle.

The Friendship Circle is a program formed to bring children and young adults with special needs and their families together for networking, support, sharing and events, according to its website.
