Blotter: Brawl in South Redondo Beach

The following information was supplied by the Redondo Beach Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following information is from the Redondo Beach Police Department's Recent Law Enforcement Events news release covering reports received June 30 through last Sunday.

Brawl in South Redondo Beach

Redondo Beach police officers near Avenue D and South Helberta Avenue were monitoring a large crowd leaving a party on South Gertruda Avenue when several of the partygoers began to fight in the street in multiple places at about 12:30 a.m. last Sunday.

Several people sustained injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, authorities said. Officers dispersed the crowd and arrested multiple people on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in public.

Victims and witnesses could not identify who started the fights, and cooperation with police was limited.

Assault with a knife

Police officers responded to a report of trouble after hearing a woman screaming for help on Saturday evening. After investigation, officers discovered that during a family dispute, a man cut his neck with a knife before cutting his stepfather.

The victim suffered serious injuries to his hands and was transported to a hospital for treatment, police said.

The suspect was taken to a secure mental health facility for treatment before being booked, police said.

The location of the incident was not disclosed.

Child found roaming PCH

A witness found a 2-year-old child wandering the sidewalk alone in the 300 block of South Pacific Coast Highway at about 6:30 a.m. July 4. The person stopped, picked up the child and called police, authorities said.

Officers began walking the street with the child to try to find the child's home, police said. One resident said the child lived at a nearby unit with his or her mother.

When officers knocked on the door, there was no answer. Officers entered and found the child's mother passed out drunk in bed, police said.

"The condition of the location was poor with open bottles of alcohol within easy reach," police said.

The mother was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, and the child was put into protective custody with the Department of Child and Family Services.

DUI arrest

A person suspected of driving under the influence collided with a parked vehicle in the 1700 block of Palos Verdes Boulevard at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.

The woman continued to drive until her "vehicle became engulfed in flames" near the intersection of Palos Verdes Boulevard and South Helberta Avenue, police said.

The driver escaped the vehicle without injury, police said. Witnesses identified her and she was placed under arrest.

Battery

A group of people got into an argument about a relationship issue in the Vons parking lot on Palos Verdes Boulevard at about 4:30 p.m. June 30, police said. Multiple suspects hit the victims until the two victims were on the ground, and at least one suspect continued to kick the victims in the head and the face.

The suspects fled before police arrived, authorities said. The victims required medical treatment.
