The is accepting applications for its 47th CERT Academy this fall, according to a notice posted on the city's website.
CERT, which stands for Community Emergency Response Team, is a group of volunteers from the area who help with post-disaster response and recovery, according to the CERT Academy website. Redondo firefighters provide training and instruction on topics including disaster preparedness, CPR and First Aid, disaster medical operations, damage assessment, fire suppression, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, and team organization.
Classes, which run from Sept. 6 through Oct. 27 and are limited to 40 participants, are taught Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with one Saturday course from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to the website.
Redondo's CERT Academy costs $40 per person for Redondo Beach residents and $100 per person for residents of other cities, according to the website. The fee includes a CERT hard hate, CPR and First Aid certification, CPR pocket mask, a photo identification card, a training manual and graduation certificates.
Graduates will be registered as CERT volunteers with the fire department, according to the website. To keep their volunteer status, registered volunteers must participate in future disaster preparedness training activities.
