Search for Pier Jumper Called Off

Authorities call off the search for David Thompson, 22, who jumped off the Redondo Beach Pier with an unidentified woman late Saturday evening.

Updated 10 a.m. Monday.

Authorities have indefinitely suspended the search for the man who jumped into the ocean from the Redondo Beach Pier late Saturday night, authorities said Sunday evening.

Divers from the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Dive Team and a helicopter crew from the U.S. Coast Guard spent Sunday morning searching for the body of David Thompson, 22, to no avail.

Divers ended their search for David Thompson, 22, when darkness fell Sunday, and there's no indication they will resume, said dispatch supervisor Michael Pittman.

The U.S. Coast Guard helicopter broke off its search at 1 p.m. Sunday, said Danny Phee, a civilian search and rescue controller. According to a report from KTLA, USCG officials said the search would not be resumed unless there are further developments.

Thompson and an unidentified woman jumped from the municipal pier shortly after 11 p.m., and the woman made it out of the surf onto the beach next to the pier soon afterward, Redondo Beach police Sgt. Michael Martinez told City News Service.

"A male and a female were seen jumping from the pier," he said. "The female made it to shore. The male was seen going under a wave and not coming back up."

The water temperature in area was 55-59 degrees and the surf 2-4 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

Initially, the woman told police and paramedics that she was the only person who jumped off the pier, but this conflicted with other information authorities had received, according to a news release prepared by Sgt. Shawn Freeman. Once she was transported to the hospital, she told police that her friend had jumped in with her.

The and police departments responded first, Martinez said said, joined in the search by Los Angeles County Lifeguards and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and ship. They continued searching the surface of the water until 3 a.m., Martinez said.

The search was resumed at daybreak on Sunday, Freeman said.

Police also checked Thompson's home and are holding out small hope that he made it ashore unseen and spent the night elsewhere, City News Service reported.

The woman was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in stable condition "to be checked out," he said. According to Freeman, she was treated for hypothermia, submersion and intoxication.

Martinez told City News Service he did not know why the pair jumped.

I'm interested in the back story - why did they jump?
Duke Noor April 16, 2012 at 07:43 pm
Not much to the sad back story as the survivor was extremely intoxicated.
