Man Hit by Car, Killed at Bus Stop

A 58-year-old Redondo Beach man was fatally struck by a vehicle while waiting at a bus stop in front of in North Redondo Beach on Saturday, according to members of the .
The accident at Artesia Boulevard and Mackay Lane occurred about 9:15 a.m., when at least two cars collided, Redondo Beach police acting Sgt. Jeff Mendence told City News Service.

"One of the involved vehicles left the roadway and struck a 58-year-old Redondo Beach resident at a bus bench located near the southeast portion of the intersection," he said.
According to police Sgt. Fabian Saucedo, the man was sitting in a wheelchair when the collision occurred.

In a comment on an earlier version of this story, Patch reader "Steve S." said he passed the bus stop at about 8:45 a.m. and may have seen the victim.
"He was in a wheelchair reading a book while waiting for the bus," Steve S. said. "When I passed by the same bus stop around 11 (a.m.), the wheelchair was all smashed up and the only thing that remained … was a shoe."
The victim, whose name was withheld pending notification of his next of kin, died from his injuries at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Saucedo said.
