Man Tried to Blow Up Motel, Deputies Say

Robert Thomas of Redondo Beach is accused of attempted arson of the Camino Hotel on Crenshaw Boulevard.

A Redondo Beach man who authorities allege tried to blow up a motel on Crenshaw Boulevard will appear in court Monday.

Robert William Thomas, 58, was arrested Aug. 21 on suspicion of attempted arson, the Daily Breeze reported.


Earlier that day inside his room at the Camino Hotel in an unincorporated county area, Thomas turned on the gas on the stove and turned on the microwave with a metal spoon inside, a representative of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told the newspaper.

Ultimately, his attempt to blow up the motel was unsuccessful, deputies said.

Thomas is being held in the Men's Central Jail on $80,000 bail.
