New Details Emerge in Burglary That Led to Fatal Shooting

More details about the Redondo Beach burglary that eventually led to a fatal shooting by Long Beach police officers of Christopher Taylor last Thursday have emerged.

Taylor, 19, of Maryland, was shot to death in Long Beach after California Highway Patrol officers spotted a white BMW that had earlier that evening been reported stolen from Redondo Beach.

Long Beach officers found the vehicle after the CHP lost sight of it and pursued it until it crashed into a residence and parked vehicle in the 6400 block of East Keynote Street, authorities said. Officers said they shot Taylor after he brandished a handgun and shot at them.

Officers still aren't sure how Taylor allegedly entered the home in the 1600 block of Morgan Lane in North Redondo Beach and retrieved the keys to a 2012 white BMW 328; however, after the shooting, Long Beach police recovered a backpack containing an iPad and a laptop in the car's trunk, according to Redondo Beach police Sgt. Shawn Freeman.

Police also found a key ring with keys to the BMW.

"Items in the car belonged to our victim," Freeman said. He added that Long Beach police contacted officers in Redondo Beach to identify property found in the car. The property stolen in Redondo Beach was returned to its rightful owners.

Property that may belong to other victims was also found in the car, Freeman said.

The shooting is being independently investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
