The name of a 79-year-old woman who was fatally struck by an SUV as she crossed Pacific Coast Highway in Torrance was released Saturday.

The woman was identified as Dolores Payne, said Coroner's Lt. David Smith.

The investigation remains open into the crash, which happened about 6:15 a.m. Friday near Calle Mayor, said Torrance police Sgt. Mick Estrada.

The SUV was northbound on PCH when it struck the Torrance resident, who was crossing the road heading east, he said. The driver of the Ford Explorer was not hurt, the sergeant said.

Paramedics rushed Payne to an area hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Northbound PCH was closed to traffic at Calle Mayor, about a mile west of Western Avenue, for about three hours to accommodate the crash investigation, Estrada said.

Police asked anyone with information about the crash to contact the Torrance police traffic division at (310) 618-5557.

Caltrans (and City of Torrance??), in their infinite wisdom, ramp up the speed limit on PCH from 35 mph to 45 mph for a short distance right before this intersection. Everywhere else on PCH its 25-35 mph. PCH and Calle Mayor, this where the confluence of traffic for three schools meet... how much more blood on their hands before they reduce and enforce the speed limit here?
