Authorities on Friday were investigating the fatal officer-involved shooting in Redondo Beach of a 43-year-old man who allegedly assaulted his mother and then armed himself with with a knife when police tried to take him into custody.
Officers responded around 11:15 p.m. Thursday to the 500 block of Susana Avenue in South Redondo Beach to investigate a report of a woman screaming as a man tried to drag her inside a residence, said Capt. Jeff Hink of the Redondo Beach Police Department.
"Arriving officers located an elderly female victim outside of the residence who appeared to be the victim of an assault," Hink said.
The male suspect, later identified as Mitchell Allison of Redondo Beach, was spotted inside the home near the front door and was ordered to surrender, but he refused, Hink said.
"Officers forced the door open," Hink said. The suspect armed himself with a knife, and an officer-involved shooting occurred."
Allison was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Hink said. The woman was the man's mother, Hink said.
The shooting is being investigated by the Redondo Beach Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the District Attorney's Office. It will also be investigated by the county Office of Independent Review, as is standard in such cases.
