A man was hospitalized in critical condition after a minivan hit him as he tried to cross Pacific Coast Highway just south of Pearl Street on Thursday night, according to a news release from the Redondo Beach Police Department. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk.
The blue minivan was traveling northbound on Pacific Coast Highway when it struck the pedestrian in the center lane, Sgt. Shawn Freeman said in the news release.
“Preliminary information to police was that the pedestrian had died,” wrote Freeman. “However, while being transported to a local hospital, the pedestrian had to be resuscitated, and was admitted to the hospital in critical condition.”
The pedestrian remains in critical condition, Freeman said.
It does not appear that the driver of the minivan was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Sgt. Jeff Mendence told Patch at the scene. The driver was not injured.
Witnesses told police that the pedestrian appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol as he staggered across the street.
Pacific Coast Highway remained closed in both directions between the intersection of Ruby Street and Guadalupe Avenue and Pearl Street late Friday evening. The street was reopened by morning rush hour.

This man apparently wasn't even in the crosswalk with the flashing lights at Pearl. If he was hit where I think he was, he was probably about 20-30 feet south of the intersection when he crossed.
