Updated: Pedestrian in Critical Condition

Police were initially told the pedestrian had died; however, he was resuscitated in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

A man was hospitalized in critical condition after a minivan hit him as he tried to cross Pacific Coast Highway just south of Pearl Street on Thursday night, according to a news release from the Redondo Beach Police Department. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk.

The blue minivan was traveling northbound on Pacific Coast Highway when it struck the pedestrian in the center lane, Sgt. Shawn Freeman said in the news release.

“Preliminary information to police was that the pedestrian had died,” wrote Freeman. “However, while being transported to a local hospital, the pedestrian had to be resuscitated, and was admitted to the hospital in critical condition.”

The pedestrian remains in critical condition, Freeman said.

It does not appear that the driver of the minivan was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Sgt. Jeff Mendence told Patch at the scene. The driver was not injured.

Witnesses told police that the pedestrian appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol as he staggered across the street.

Pacific Coast Highway remained closed in both directions between the intersection of Ruby Street and Guadalupe Avenue and Pearl Street late Friday evening. The street was reopened by morning rush hour.

Police are investigating, and anyone with information—including witnesses to the collision—is asked to contact investigator Mike Dyberg at 310-379-2477 extension 2721 or via email at mike.dyberg@redondo.org.

Thats what happens when your a no good drunk. The driver is not at fault. When you drink to much you dont think, and do stupid things like not walking in a crosswalk.

Everyday I look out my office window at this exact spot. For two years I've been worried that someone would get hurt here, I see peds run across the street without looking, peds walk in front of on-coming traffic, and even peds pushing strollers or animals into the street before barreling out themselves. Last night when I closed my front doors I saw the man laying in the street & realized my nightmare has come true. My heart goes out to both parties, I can only hope that from now on people will go to the corner where there are crosswalks with lights. Please stop making my heart hurt at work people, I've seen 3 car accidents in the last 2 years in the SAME intersection, if that is not grounds for change I do not know what is...

Pacific Coast Highway is maintained by the State of California Dept. of Transportation (CALTRANS). In an effort to save time, as I would have to relay your concerns to Caltrans, I will provide you with the traffic engineer in charge of this street. He will answer your concerns or someone from his office.
His name is Yunus Ghausi, Senior Transportation Engineer, Caltrans District 7 - "Yunus.Ghausi@dot.ca.gov". Please contact him with additional information on what your concerns are in detail. This will assist him in a proper response and hopefully a better resolve to the issues.

Hi Joi,
This man apparently wasn't even in the crosswalk with the flashing lights at Pearl. If he was hit where I think he was, he was probably about 20-30 feet south of the intersection when he crossed.
