RBPD Gets Grant for Sting, Stakeout Operations

The $90,000 grant will make the streets safer for Redondo Beach residents, police say.

A $90,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety will help the Redondo Beach Police Department prevent driving-related deaths and injuries by funding ongoing enforcement efforts, according to a news release from the police department.

"The enforcement of distracted driving, speed, stop sign, red light, and other safety violations are an ongoing, primary concern of Redondo Beach residents," Chief Joe Leonardi said in a news release. "This grant will allow officers to give their total attention to traffic enforcement in known problem areas. These directed efforts would not be possible with our current deployment of patrol officers who must divide their attention with calls for service and neighborhood patrols."

The grand will pay for the following activities, per the police department:

  • Specialized DUI and drugged driving training such as Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement and Drug Recognition Evaluator
  • DUI saturation patrols
  • Motorcycle safety enforcement
  • Distracted driving enforcement
  • Speed, red light and stop sign enforcement
  • Warrant service operations targeting multiple DUI offenders
  • Court "sting" operations to cite individuals driving from court after having their driver's license suspended or revoked
  • Stakeout operations to observe the "worst of the worst" repeat DUI offender probationers with suspended or revoked driver's licenses

In California, traffic deaths from all causes declined by nearly 39 percent from 2006-2013; however, they rose 2.6 percent in 2011, according to the news release.

"State and federal officials anticipate that figures will show another rise for 2012," according to the news release.

DUI deaths account for nearly 30 percent of traffic fatalities.
