Retired Police K-9 Put to Sleep

Andy, a 9-year-old shepherd, helped capture numerous suspects throughout the South Bay.

Retired police dog Andy, who spent nearly five years in the , was put to sleep after battling cancer, the department announced in a news release Wednesday evening. Andy was 9 years old.

Born in Europe on Sept. 11, 2002, Andy was appointed to the K-9 unit in January 2004, where he served with Officer Rich Sigler until their retirement in December 2008.

"Not only was Andy an incredibly skilled working canine, he was a good friend to the community," the police department wrote in a news release. "Andy was often seen making special appearances at various community functions.

"Andy was loved by everyone around him and will be sorely missed by Officer Sigler and his family."

The Redondo Beach K-9 Donation Fund welcomes contributions in honor of Andy. Donations should be sent in care of Lt. Todd Heywood to the Redondo Beach Police Department at 401 Diamond St., Redondo Beach, CA, 90277.
