A mother killed her three children at a home in an unincorporated area near Torrance today and was taken into custody, according to the sheriff's department.

The mother was adjacent to the three children, who were dead at the scene, when deputies arrived and she was detained and taken to a hospital for examination, said Deputy Kim Manatt of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

Carol Coronado, 30, will be booked for murder, Manatt said.

Neighbors told the Daily Breeze the slain children were girls, ages 2, 3 and 2 months old. A neighbor told the newspaper that Coronado had a knife in her hand and tried to stab herself. She was also naked, and deputies took her outside and then put a blanket on her. The father was working on a car across the street.

The girls' grandmother said the bed the victims were on was covered with blood, a neighbor told the Daily Breeze.

Deputies from the Carson Station were met by family members at 5:10 p.m. in the 1000 block of West 223rd Street, between Normandie and Vermont avenues, Manatt said.

Manatt said 223rd Street at Meylers Street will be closed for pedestrian and vehicle traffic for most of the night.
