Slow Speed Police Chase Winds Through North Redondo Beach

A man in a stolen vehicle allegedly takes police on a chase through the Target parking lot and South Bay Galleria lots.

A man was in custody Tuesday evening after allegedly leading police on a slow speed chase through North Redondo Beach and parking lots near the South Bay Galleria in a stolen vehicle.

According to Redondo Beach Police Sgt. Scott Wiebel, a helicopter from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department picked up a LoJack signal from a white Honda Accord reported stolen earlier in the day. Redondo Beach police, acting on that tip, located the occupied vehicle near the intersection of Carnegie and Phelan lanes.

Wiebel said officers then attempted to pull the vehicle over near the intersection of Phelan Lane and Grant Avenue, but the driver did not yield.

The driver proceeded to lead officers on a low speed chase towards the South Bay Galleria before winding through the parking lots of the Galleria and Target, police said.

The driver then crossed into Torrance, where he eventually stopped and surrendered to police near the intersection of Hawthorne Boulevard and 178th Street.

Wiebel said police are also investigating whether or not the driver of the stolen vehicle was under the influence of alcohol at the time. A passenger in the vehicle was also detained for a short period of time but was released shortly after.

Officers from the Torrance Police Department and a helicopter from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department also aided in the pursuit.
