Police Arrest Battery Suspect in Lawndale

The suspect is accused of battery and petty theft in connection to an incident at the South Bay Galleria.

Police arrested a man Saturday night in Lawndale on suspicion of battery and petty theft in connection to an incident at the South Bay Galleria in North Redondo Beach, authorities said.

The man attempted to steal something from a store in the mall, but a loss prevention officer stopped him, according to Sgt. Jeff Mendence of the Redondo Beach Police Department.

"There was a physical altercation, and the suspect fled to Lawndale," where he was arrested at about 8 p.m., Mendence said.

Additional information and the suspect's identity were not immediately available.

A second, unrelated incident nearby on Artesia Boulevard on the same night concerned a burglary, Mendence said.

The burglary is under investigation; however, police are not actively pursing a suspect, he said. Other information was not immediately available.
