1 Dead in Aviation Boulevard Crash

Police are advising drivers to avoid a stretch of Aviation Boulevard on the Redondo Beach-Manhattan Beach border.

One person is dead and two others were hospitalized after a crash on Aviation Boulevard on the Redondo Beach-Manhattan Beach border at about 5:35 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.

The two-vehicle collision in the 3300 block of Aviation Boulevard between Bataan Road and Farrell Avenue resulted in the closure of Aviation Boulevard between Artesia and Manhattan Beach boulevards, according to Sgt. Chuck Prestia of the Redondo Beach Police Department.

A passenger in one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, said Frank Chiella, battalion chief for the Manhattan Beach Fire Department.

The passenger was a 62-year-old man who was not otherwise identified because his next of kin had not been notified, according to Prestia.

The driver of the same vehicle sustained minor to moderate injuries and was transported by a Hermosa Beach Fire Department rescue unit to Harbor UCLA Medical Center, Chiella said.

The driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported in a McCormick ambulance to Little Company of Mary Hospital, Chiella said.

Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach police remained at the scene of the crash Wednesday night.

Redondo Beach police are investigating the incident. Anyone with information relating to the crash or who witnessed the collision should call Redondo Beach traffic investigator Bill Turner at 310-379-2477 ext. 2721 or at bill.turner@redondo.org.
