A DUI and driver's license checkpoint will be set up within the Redondo Beach city limits Friday night, according to a news release from the Redondo Beach Police Department.Though the exact location was not disclosed, the checkpoint will run from 7 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday.
Police will strive to delay people at the checkpoint as little as possible; those caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be arrested.
"DUI checkpoints have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we witnessed since 2006 in California," California Office of Traffic Safety Director Christopher J. Murphy said in a statement. "But since the tragedy of (driving under the influence) accounts for nearly one-third of traffic fatalities, Redondo Beach needs the high visibility enforcement and public awareness that checkpoints provide."
Funding for Friday's checkpoint is provided by a grant from the OTS through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
