"DUI checkpoints have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we witnessed since 2006 in California," California Office of Traffic Safety Director Christopher J. Murphy said in a statement. "But since the tragedy of (driving under the influence) accounts for nearly one-third of traffic fatalities, Redondo Beach needs the high visibility enforcement and public awareness that checkpoints provide."

Funding for Friday's checkpoint is provided by a grant from the OTS through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
