Filing Period Opens for City Treasurer Post

Potential candidates for Redondo Beach City Treasurer have until Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m. to file their nominating papers.

The filing period for the position of Redondo Beach City Treasurer opened Tuesday and will close Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m., according to the city clerk's office.

Candidates for city treasurer must be registered Redondo Beach voters and have lived in the city for at least 30 days before the date of filing. According to the Daily Breeze, the position comes with a $116,950 annual salary. Benefits include cellphone, a car allowance, health insurance and a pension.

The election will be held May 14, the date of a potential runoff election from the March 5 municipal races. Because there are four candidates for mayor and District 1 councilmen, city officials say it's likely that no candidate in at least one of the races will capture a majority vote, forcing a runoff.

The position opened when former City Treasurer Ernie O'Dell retired in December. Because he had more than two years left on his term, the city charter dictated that an election must be held to find his replacement.

In the meantime, Tom Gaian has been appointed acting city treasurer. At the time of his appointment, he said he had no interest in running for the post in the election.

Former Councilman Chris Cagle has announced that he intends to seek the treasurer's post.
