Muratsuchi Announces Endorsements

Al Muratsuchi, a candidate for the 66th Assembly District, announces additional endorsements from both Republicans and Democrats.

The race for California's new 66th Assembly District is apparently getting some national attention, as U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye (D-Hawaii) announced his endorsement of Torrance school board member and Democrat Al Muratsuchi for the assembly seat last week, according to a news release from Muratsuchi's campaign.

Muratsuchi and Torrance businessman Craig Huey, a Republican, beat out Republican Nathan Mintz in the June top-two jungle primary for their spots on November's ballot.

"(Muratsuchi's) work as a deputy attorney general with the California Department of Justice and as a board member of the Torrance Unified School District provides the proper mix of experience that will serve him well in the state legislature," Inouye said in the news release. "He understands and works to uphold the law while ensuring that the children in his district have access to the education they need to realize their potential and pursue their ambitions."

In an email to reporters, Muratsuchi for Assembly campaign manager Sergio Carrillo said it "speaks volumes" to receive endorsements from "respected national leaders like Sen. Inoye."

Additionally, Carillo noted that Palos Verdes Estates Mayor George Bird, Torrance City Councilman Bill Sutherland and Water Replenishment District of Southern California board member Rob Katherman—who all endorsed Mintz in the primary—had endorsed Muratsuchi instead of another Republican.

Redondo Beach City Councilman Bill Brand, a Democrat, has also endorsed Muratsuchi.

Cities in the new 66th Assembly District include Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, the Palos Verdes Peninsula and Torrance.

Bill Sutherland is termed out as councilman in 2014. There will be no endorsement of Sutherland from the local CRA unit if he decides to run for mayor or some other office. Since he always endorses Democrats for the TUSD School Board why not just re-register as a Democrat? Claude Todoroff, Treausrer Torrance-Lomita Republican Assembly

when april wayland, children's author, says 'jump,' i say - how high?
we're jumping on marasutchi's people wagon as we speak. there is NO doubt that he will represent ALL the people in our district, and not just those who 'agree' with his religious values. this IS a small piece of america, but it IS america. thank you, al.

I am appalled that a Republican in city government would endorse a Democrat for any office. No matter what one's party affiliation, there is no excuse for turning over the legislature to tax-and-spend, union-backed politicians who have no interest in lowering taxes, balancing budgets, and servicing the immense debt, weighed down with multi-billion dollar pension liabilities.

I agree. Our elected Democrats, and too many Liberal voters, continue to act as though wishful thinking for "business as usual" is working for us. It isn't. It has not been. It's over.
As more communities declare bankruptcy, perhaps voting Republican will gain popularity. Yes, please vote for Craig Huey.

Some folks have fuzzy memories. More than a decade ago, California had a budget surplus. Democrats wanted to save some of this surplus in a rainy day fund, in case the economy slowed. Republicans said the money "belonged to the people" in the form of deep tax cuts. The tax cuts won. The economy tanked. California's budget deficits soared.
Ever since, Republicans have tried to blame Democrats, the fiscally conservative and responsible party. By the way, the exact same scenario happened nationally -- and Republicans were the ones who, in essence, put two wars and deep tax cuts on a credit card.
