Along with other members of the task force like , Simpson had worked tirelessly to make sure the new Veterans Memorial was built.

Simpson wasn't only on Gin's mind during Friday's service—the veteran's family received the retired flag that flew at the memorial over the course of the past year.

Other veterans were also honored, including keynote speaker Capt. Rodger R. Laferriere from the U.S. Coast Guard. Attending dignitaries included Gin, Councilman Matt Kilroy, Councilman Pat Aust, Assemblywoman Betsy Butler and Rep. Janice Hahn, among others.

Music was provided by the Wind Ensemble and the Los Angeles Police Department's Emerald Pipes and Drums.
