Women Voters Key in Presidential Election

First lady Michelle Obama's speech highlights how, in a 50-50 nation, the narrative that wins this fight may win the White House.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—President Barack Obama "believes that women are more than capable of making our own choices about our bodies and our health care,” first lady Michelle Obama said during her Tueday speech to the Democratic National Convention. "That's what my husband stands for."

It was a continuation of a consistent message from women at all levels of the Democratic party: This election is about the government’s right to control your body.

Earlier that day, just a few blocks away from where Mrs. Obama spoke, Gov. Nikki Haley made the somewhat different Republican pitch.

“Let me tell you about women. Women are extremely smart,” the first female governor of South Carolina said. “They care about a lot more than contraception.”

Those two arguments—that the 2012 presidential election is about women’s rights, and that women’s rights are a distraction from economic factors that affect American families—have been made again and again by supporters at every level in Charlotte this week and in Tampa last week. Much has been said about 2012 being a grand debate over the federal budget, but in a 50-50 nation, the narrative that wins this fight may win the White House.

Delegates in Lockstep

Women delegates in Charlotte and Tampa, who are more often than not leaders in their hometowns, are consistent in their messaging. “This war on women is absolutely phony,” said RNC delegate from Connecticut Pat Longo last week. “It’s strictly to distract from issues of debt, deficit, and spending.”

“Wisconsin women need to realize that we need to worry about what's going on for our kids and our grandkids,” said Patty Reiman,

On the streets of Uptown Charlotte, female physiology is front and center: Planned Parenthood supporters wear pink shirts everywhere, and Austin delegate Heather Ross went so far as to walk the streets of Charlotte with a pink felt “uterus” stitched into her ballcap.

Asked what American women need from this election, delegate Grace Carrington from Coral Springs, Md. said, “Let us make our decisions for our bodies. Period.”

Miami Democratic Delegate Bonnie Weiner stressed that the most important issue for her was that, “We could have our most basic and important rights taken from us.”

The Diminishing Number of Undecided Women

ABC News released a poll on Tuesday suggesting Republicans were cutting into Obama’s advantage among women. Michelle Obama's speech, stressing that "at the end of the day, my most important title is still 'mom-in-chief'" was no doubt designed to make up some of that lost ground.

But regardless of the affect of last night's speech, the army of businesswomen, moms and sisters on either side may continue to sway voters back and forth for the next 60 days.

As voting women pick sides, the best remaining opportunities may lie with women like Connecticut Representative Terrie Wood.

“I firmly believe social issues should be left to the individual and not to the government to decide,” Wood told a Patch editor in Tampa. “I find a lot of women in our community register as Democrats because they’re pro-choice and they support gay rights. Well, most of us [conservative women in Connecticut] do too.”

Wood is a Republican delegate and a firm Romney supporter. The question is how women who share her conflicted feelings will vote.

How important will women voters be in the upcoming election? Take our poll and tell us in the comments below.

The First Lady did an outstanding job. I understand her points and she made them well.
This election is only about one thing, the economy, period, end of story. So, her husband will be held accountable to where we are with that.

Here is a point she didn't make. Miz Michelle, who requires 26 personal assistants at a cost of $1,750,00.00 plus change- - - the only change American taxpayers can believe in!!! For a person that does not even have an official position as first lady, this sure is a big expense to us taxpayers.

Just Tim and John, excellent points! Kudos!

Women need to decide if they want control of their lives or leave it up to male politicans with a narrow controlling agenda. The economy, jobs, and deficit reduction should be the issues, not abortion, birth control, "legitimate" rape, and access to health care. Attacks on women rights have replaced illegal immigration as the hot button emotional issue this election year. Why?

Looks like all the first ladies tend to have more staff people than you'd expect. Laura Bush was right up there with at least 18, and she didn't have any school age kids.
http://www.factcheck.org/2009/08/michelle-obamas-staff/ I hate political lies and deceptions, so I look at politifact and fact check.org quite frequently. And as a former Republican, I can say that the Republicans generally put out much more lies, if you frequently check the facts. It's one of the things that has really turned me away from the party.

@Melissa, I really don't care how many servants anyone who is in the white house now, or throughout our entire history have had. Really doesn't matter at all.
The economy matters, it affects all of us, servants don't affect any of us.
John Perchulyn September 5, 2012 at 02:37 pm
Just Tim. I beg to differ. Paying servants almost $2 MILLION dollars of taxpayers money affects all of us. If she is there four more years that will be probably over $8 MILLION dollars. Boy, I would like to have some that to pay for my health insurance that went up over $100 in the recent months. That would only be $1,200.
Tim Sole September 5, 2012 at 02:55 pm
@John, I understand completely how much money that is, I'm in my fifties, healthcare is way out of control. I also understand that, things of this nature takes us away from concentrating on the real problem.
If we don't get the economy rolling again, everything else is moot. We can't fix whats broke, while we are all broke.
John Perchulyn September 5, 2012 at 04:46 pm
Well said and I agree. I'll turn 62 next month. Been looking for a job and trying to figure out how to pay that $600+/month health insurance premium.
Tim Sole September 5, 2012 at 05:18 pm
@John, I'm 55 and a struggling small business owner. I spent thirty three years working my tail off after I got out of the Marine Corps, while not jumping on the personnel debt bandwagon, having to have a new car every year bandwagon, paying for kids college, so they don't have debt, taking care of the elderly parents stuff and now. Well, what the heck happened. I did it right and some guys just decide to blow up the entire economy, by over valuing everything, real estate, stocks, gas and so on.
Then I listen to the first lady and she doesn't even mention the mess. yes, I understand we have social issues, yes we need to fix them, but come mon, fix what needs fixed first.
John Perchulyn September 6, 2012 at 04:51 pm
I was a business owner for 17 years. Photofinishing to be specific. That all went into the toilet once digital cameras hit the main stream. Sold off what was left and now trying to re-invent myself at 62 in this economy.
I wish you the best and thank you for serving our country!!!
