Council Approves Controversial Condo Project

The Planning Commission's decision to approve the six-unit condominium was upheld, despite concerns over views.

With a 3-2 vote, the Redondo Beach City Council approved a controversial condo project at 1000 Esplanade last Tuesday. District 2 Councilman Bill Brand and District 5 Councilman Matt Kilroy dissented.

The vote allows developer Ben Agarwal to demolish the existing apartment building, which has eight apartments, and build a six-unit condominium. The controversy stems from some residents' wish to protect public views over private property—the new building would block a view from the ocean from a certain spot on Avenue B, the Daily Breeze reported.

The original project was approved by the Redondo Beach Planning Commission on April 18 and appealed to the city council by Brand on April 26.

The city of Redondo Beach does not have a view-protection ordinance.
