RUHS Off to State Academic Decathlon

Students from Redondo Union High School qualify to compete in the California Academic Decathlon in Sacramento.

Redondo Union High School will compete in the California Academic Decathlon, which will be held March 14-17 in Sacramento, Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon officials announced Wednesday.

The Redondo Union team, which earned 43,053.8 points out of a possible 60,000, is one of six teams to qualify as wild card entrants for the statewide contest. Other teams included West (45,771.4); Burbank (45,635); Mark Keppel (44,327); El Rancho (43,332.5); and South (41,654.7).

Beverly Hills High School won the county contest with a score of 53,990.3 points and will also be headed to Sacramento.

The theme of this year's competition was Russia. The competition began Jan. 26 at El Rancho High School with nearly 500 students from 52 teams competing in the speech, interview and essay categories and taking tests in art, economics, language and literature, mathematics, music and school science.

The competition concluded Feb. 2 at USC with the Super Quiz.

The Los Angeles County teams advancing to the state competition will be joined by the Los Angeles Unified School District winner—two-time defending national champion Granada Hills High and nine other teams from the district that qualified.
