21st Village Runner 4th of July 5K Results

It was the largest field ever.

From a press release:

Just over 4,000 runners, the largest field in the history of the event, competed in the 21st edition of the Village Runner 4th of July 5K presented by UCLA Health.

The race was run under partly cloudy skies with cool ocean breezes keeping the temperature in the high 60s.

D'ann Arthur, a 27 years old emergency room doctor from Redondo Beach ran 16:43 to win the women’s race.  David Cardona, 22 years old, of Torrance, captured the men’s race. The race winners each won $200 prize money.

Placing second and third in the women’s race were Kate Myers in Manhattan Beach, CA and Tracee Van Den Wyk from Temple City, CA respectively. In the men’s race, Chris Foster was second and Mark Tripp third, with both hailing from Redondo Beach.

“I’m coming off a rough track season. Today I was 'killing it' for the hometown crowd. I’m from Torrance. I’m now working at Village Runner, Redondo Beach. We had during the race the same weather as San Luis Obispo.  I ran with the leader and I passed him with 2 1/2 miles. It’s a great experience winning this race. It’s the third time I won,” said 1st place male winner David Cardona.

The women’s winner D’ann Arthur, originally from Dallas, Texas is currently working as a doctor doing her residency at UCLA Harbor General Hospital in Torrance.

“I work in emergency medicine. Last summer I had patellar tendonitis and couldn’t run. Winning today is so satisfying. My running was saved through a lot of physical therapy and positive energy. I’m from Dallas, and I just moved to South Redondo recently. I work in emergency medicine, and was ready for any problems on the course today,” stated Arthur.

The event highlighted a 5K Run, as well as the 5K Walk. The race began on Independence Day at 8 a.m. in Riviera Village. Prior to the race there was a Red, White, and Blue Costume Contest with gift certificates awarded for the best, and most unique, running costumes.

UCLA Health, which has continued its expansion to better serve the South Bay, is the event’s new presenting sponsor and exclusive health care provider. UCLA Health Systems recently opened offices in the South Bay communities of Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and Torrance, and offers the best available service and state-of-the-art resources to its patients.

The Sound 100.3FM Classic Rock Radio was back as the presenting media sponsor. They had their street team live at the event playing tunes! Land Rover South Bay continued as the event Gold Medal sponsor and provided the pace car for the race. Land Rover South Bay has a huge inventory of new and used Land Rovers and Range Rovers.

The first edition of the Village Runner 4th of July 21 years ago drew a few hundred participants. The popularity of the event has grown immensely in the following years, and this year’s race topped 4,000 runners for the first time.

“We saw a huge jump in our number of runners this year,” said race director Mike Ward. “For many people, the 4th of July 5K is the one time each year they reunite with old friends,” says Ward, who is also the founder and owner of Village Runner.

Portions of the proceeds from the 5K will go toward after school cross country and track and field programs of the South Bay area.

Additional event sponsors included Clif Bar, which sampled their Clif Shots and Clif Bars at the race. The Remedy Pharm returned as event sponsor. Continuing event contributors include CenterCal Real Estate and Novella Apartments.  Whole Foods Market is a new event supporter. Rock & Brews, Redondo Beach, hosted the post-event party that had people waiting out the door.  Bob Larsen, former UCLA coaching great and current coach of Boston Marathon winner Meb Keflizighi, was presented with the “Pathfinder Award” by 4-time Olympian Martha Watson and Jac Folkert of UCLA Health.

The top three male and female finishers received cash prizes of $200, $125, and $75 respectively, and all children who participated in the Firecracker Dashes received medals.
