Wave riding is no longer just about solo ocean ventures—it's also about community and camaraderie, thanks to the South Bay Boardriders Club.
The group of wave riders have been hosting functions and contests here in the Beach Cities for a little more than a year. Hermosa resident and photographer Mike Balzer founded the club during a meeting with friends at in October 2009.
The organization has grown to host surf contests, and members share the history of the water sport with younger generations. The group's newest community venture is the first annual Big Wave Challenge (see accompanying photo under video).
The contest will honor an athlete who is documented, in a photo or video, paddling into the biggest South Bay wave. An awards dinner for the winner will be held in April, and prizes include $1,000 and a Body Glove wetsuit.
To enter the challenge, mail a photo or video of someone riding the big wave to 2629 Manhattan Ave., PMB 17, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254. The deadline for entries is March 31.
