Redondo XC to Run at Warren Stauffer Invite

This Saturday morning the full set of Redondo Union cross country teams will return to the Warren Stauffer Invitational, the scene of Sea Hawk distance running dominance over the past 4 years. Featuring race categories based only on grade, there is no direct varsity competition. Rather, at the conclusion of the meet the best times for each school over the course of the morning's events are summed up to determine the combined best team times. This, in effect, assembles each school's "varsity" from its best runners of the day, regardless of grade level.

This type of categorization will make for a different set of racing circumstances for the Redondo Teams, used to running in a pack, especially the varsity teams. This week will see the girls varsity team, that was become an undefeated juggernaut, split up into 3 races.

The Senior Race will have Laura O'Neill and Kelly Ryan supported by JV mainstays Pammie Sherman and Olivia Loveland.

The Junior Race will feature top varsity talents Rachel Bush and Lyndsey Mull joined by JV teammates Brenna Sopp and Lisa Inoune.

The Sophomore Race should prove to be particularly devastating to the competition. Top JV runners Alexis Thibodeau and Elizabeth de la Torre will aptly support Kayla Ferron and Cara Ulizio, rising stars that have been top varsity finishers in recent races, aided by varsity teammate Anique Villegas.

The Freshman Girls Race will pit leading Redondo runners Siena Hsu and Josie Desir against some of the best freshmen girls in the region.

The boys Varsity will be similarly separated out with Dezhan Bland being the sole varsity runner in the senior race. The Junior Race will feature the varsity's Tyler Caracoza, Patrick Borgerding and Alex Guzman, aided by top JV runner Andrew Hazeltine, just back from his stealthy solo-JV effort at the Nike Pre-Nationals in Oregon.

As with the sophomore girls, the Sophomore Boys race should be a Redondo showcase event. Current number one runner Evan Malone-White has to be the favored individual in the field, with teammate Garrett Klatte figuring for a top-tier placing. They will be backed up by a pack of star sophomore boys including RJ Mushaney, Joseph Levine, Kevin White, Art Fontana, Serge Ganous and David Alexander.

The freshman boys, coming off runway victories at the recent Bay League cluster meet and Wednesday's South Bay Cup, are expect to continue their winning streak. Dustin Herold and Will Tait could take the top individual honors, with brothers Tomohiro and Takahiro Yamaya placing well.

Hollydale Park provides a flat and fast 3-mile cross country course over grass, dirt and asphalt park trails. It is very fan-friendly, as the lack of hills allow for one to see the runners even a considerable distances away. Come out to watch, as Redondo Union and other South Bay schools, including Torrance High, compete against the region's best.
