Fishing Report: Man Fights Swordfish

The San Diego tuna bite was excellent for the boats willing to make the 140- to 160-mile journey from Point Loma. Big catches of bluefin and yellowfin tuna were still being made through the weekend.

There were a few tuna being taken as close as 80 miles from San Diego. Anglers are hopeful that this may develop into a new area of tuna closer to home.

"The fish are hitting on sardines, and chrome and blue jigs. It is a very good idea to have some 30-pound floral-carbon line, ring hooks and a rod belt, too," said skipper Scott McDaniels of the Sea Adventure 80.

Barry Brightenburg hooked a swordfish near San Clemente Island around 4 p.m. Saturday. He fought the monster for nearly 16 hours before the hook broke and the fish gained its freedom. Captain Jim Kingsmill from the Chaser reported that the swordfish was hooked on 30-pound test line.
