It's Game On at South Bay Sports

South Bay Sports President Dennis Fox dishes on how to get involved in recreational sports in Redondo Beach.

Involvement in intramural sports doesn’t have to end after college. In Redondo Beach, recreational sports are as active as ever, year-round.

But a newcomer to town might have trouble finding out where the leagues are and how to get involved. That’s where Dennis Fox comes in.

The 36-year-old Redondo Beach resident has been overseeing South Bay Sports since he launched the company in 2001.

The program’s mission is "to provide a wide range of individual and team sports and special events at a variety of competitive and recreational levels to the [South Bay] community," according to its website.

The program is still going strong, but offers soccer only.

"We were a multi-sport league, focusing on soccer, flag football and softball," Fox told Patch. "As the years progressed, we had more and more interest in soccer so basically we focused more on soccer."

Now soccer teams play year-round throughout the week as part of the league at in Redondo Beach. People can sign up for free online as free agents to join a team, or be selected for a team.

"It’s a social league, we’re there to have fun. It’s not like a World Cup league. It’s a place to socialize, meet new people and friends," Fox said, adding that some people who signed up to join the co-ed teams even ended up meeting "their other half and got married."

While many of the people who sign up are recent college grads, Fox said that overall the league is "really diverse."

"We get a lot of LMU, USC, and UCLA of course," Fox said. "I went to Berkeley, so there’s Berkeley people. It’s a really diverse crowd. We have many engineers from Northrop Grumman facilities [and] we’ve got a lot of teachers."

If soccer is your favorite sport, like it is for Fox, he said that the best way to get involved with South Bay Sports is to sign up as a free agent. Once you’re picked up for a team, play is for 10 weeks total.

A team in the league can cost $700. So with about 10 players on a team, you end up paying about $70 for the season, Fox said.

Softball and flag football leagues are also big in the Beach Cities—"Redondo Beach usually runs the softball leagues and Hermosa Beach has football leagues run by the city," Fox said.

Hermosa Beach’s four-person, co-ed flag football league games are played just north of the on the sand. You can register at the or on the city’s website to join. Hermosa Beach also offers men’s and women’s basketball leagues. For more information, contact league director Dennis Hrboka at 310-427-9120.

Along with softball, Redondo Beach offers men’s and co-ed volleyball. To get involved in either softball or volleyball through the city of Redondo Beach, call coordinator Rob Pierce at 310-318-0666 or email robert.pierce@redondo.org.
