New Schools Join CIF-SS Bay League

A realignment of the Bay, Ocean and Pioneer leagues is officially approved.

The Bay League for high school athletics will look a little different during the 2014-2015 school year, the Daily Breeze reported this week.

The CIF Southern Section voted to approve a recommendation from the South Bay Athletic Associations to change the makeup of the Bay, Ocean and Pioneer leagues.

Next year, the Bay League—which already includes Redondo Union, Palos Verdes Peninsula, Palos Verdes and Mira Costa high schools—will add Inglewood and Morningside high schools.

In return, it loses West Torrance and Leuzinger high schools to the Pioneer League, which also includes Torrance, South Torrance, North Torrance and Centennial high schools.

The plan was initially approved in May of this year; however, El Segundo High School appealed the decision. El Segundo was moved from the Pioneer League to the Ocean League, which includes Santa Monica and Beverly Hills high schools.

"This was a definite no for us," El Segundo athletic director Steve Shevlin told the Los Angeles Daily News in May. "This organization was supposed to be in the best interests of all schools, but the competitive equity is unbalanced. A school of our size playing Santa Monica is not fair."
