New Sports Fields Open in Torrance

The Toyota Sports Complex features two full-sized soccer fields with artificial turf. There are plans for the fields to be used for lacrosse, football, soccer and rugby.

Officials celebrated today the opening of a municipal sports complex in Torrance that bears the name of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. following a $500,000 donation.

"We're very excited this all came together, but it was a very difficult path to get to this point," said Torrance Mayor Frank Scotto, adding that the lighting is state of the art and designed to reduce light pollution as much as possible.

"We realize that these fields will be used 24/7, 365," Scotto said.

Torrance is co-hosting the American Youth Soccer Organization's National Games July 1-8 with Riverside. About 500 teams are scheduled to compete in the tournament.

AYSO started in Torrance in 1964, Scotto said.

More than 15,000 youth use the city's parks, according to a city official.
