Redondo Sportfishing Pier Reopens

New Redondo Sportfishing Pier managers Larry and Lisa Derr promise an atmosphere where the customer comes first.

The Pier reopened under new management on Thursday, bringing welcome news for anglers who were saddened by the thought that the landing might have gone out of business permanently.

"I grew up fishing in Redondo," said Palos Verdes Peninsula resident Charlie Mulcahy. "Nothing could make me happier that seeing the pier open again."

Larry and Lisa Derr, owners of In Seine Bait Company in Marina del Rey, took over the operation. "We want to make the customer No. 1," said Larry Derr. "Whatever will make our customers happiest is what we are going to provide."

Derr has operated In Seine Bait's Marina del Rey location since 1995; King Harbor is his second location. Derr plans to provide live bait—including sardines and anchovies—to sportfishing boats, private boaters and pier fishermen.

Live bait on the pier will give anglers an opportunity to catch bonito, halibut, bass and other fish.

The landing office has undergone a remodel job with new paint, new flooring, and a new attitude. “We just treat people like we would like to be treated,” said Derr. “We want to make Redondo Sportfishing a family fun place to visit.”

The landing already has several boats available. There is the half-day Redondo Special and the three-quarter-day Tradition for daily open party trips. The Betty G, the Slammer and the High Liner are all available for charter.

Derr is not stopping there. “We have a 42- and 65-foot slip available for two more boats," he said. "We are looking for a possible island or dive boat as well as a luxury six-pack yacht.”

The landing has fishing licenses for sale, has added snacks and sodas, and has plenty of rods and reels to rent. Derr also has new T-shirts, sweatshirts and hats available.

Sportfishing boats have been operating out of Redondo Beach since the pier closed in December; however, this will make everything more convenient for sportfishing enthusiasts. Fishing licenses were not available during the time the landing was closed, and anglers had to call the individual boats for a reservation.

"It was crazy for a while," said Redondo Special Captain Eric Hobday. "I was trying to run the boat and take reservations at the same time."

Fishing enthusiasts can still catch a great meal, too. , located right next to the landing, offers al fresco dinning from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"Redondo used to be one of the premier landings in Southern California," said Jimmy Bass from Tradition Sportfishing. "This is a giant step towards reestablishing that."
