Redondo Swimmers Drop Dual Meet at Mira Costa

Junior Jonathan Diaz set a season-best in the 200-meter freestyle for Redondo Union High on Thursday and Hogan Inscore won two events, but the Sea Hawks fell to rival Mira Costa 98-66 in a Bay League swimming dual meet.

"It was mixed results today. There was enough success for a source of encouragement for the rest of the season, it was tough competition," Redondo coach Mark Rubke said.

Diaz, who won the 200-free, also was second in the 500-meter freestyle. 

"I'm really happy with today, I'm on track for getting a school record later in the season in the 200, my off-season and on-season training has been good and I'm having a much better season than last year," Diaz said.

Hogan Inscore took the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter breaststroke. 

"It was cold, I wanted to get in the water and I swam pretty well," he said.  "Knowing what to expect this year, with tapering and how the meets work, it makes you less nervous and you can just focus on competing."

The boys' 400-meter freestyle relay team picked up a victory as well as victories from Declan Andrew in the breaststroke and Erik Danryd in the 500-meter freestyle.

"The boys had more positive than negative, we got some good performances," Rubke said.  "I was pleasantly surprised with Declan's [Andrew] performance. He has only been back in the pool for a month and a half after a broken wrist, so that was a great job."

On the girls' side, the Sea Hawks were swimming against the clock more than their competitors at Mira Costa falling by a score of 139-27.

"We have a smaller team and we're younger so we have to focus on details — our starts, making good turns and having a good breathing pattern," Rubke said.

Jaycee Baldus picked up a second place finish for the Sea Hawks in the 100-meter backstroke. Senior teammate Karina Vint picked up a third place in the 200-meter individual medley and fourth place in the 100-meter butterfly and 100-meter freestyle.

"My fly time was the best so far this season and my times are on track with where they should be at this point," Vint said.  "It was cold early and kind of hard to warm up, but I swam the 200 medley for the first time this year and that was fun."

Redondo is having a new pool built, but it will not be ready until next fall. For the past year, they have been getting pool time from Mira Costa and the Sea Hawks have been thankful for being accommodated by their fellow league team.

"Attendance has been good, the morale is high," Rubke said. "We're making the best of the situation that this team has inherited and I'm proud of the effort and commitment."

The boys and girls teams are 1-3 in the Bay League and are looking forward to peaking with the league finals in May.

"The team has a lot of fun, everyone is supportive and we have lots to work on, but it's an environment where you meet new people and that makes it fun," Inscore said.
