Redondo Union Boys Golfers Fall to Stout Mira Costa
The Sea Hawks' Kenny Cole shoots a 37 to tie for the low individual round.
The Redondo Union High golf team has been focused on team goals all season. Tuesday, there were some bright spots on a foggy and rainy day, despite a 14-shot loss to Bay League powerhouse Mira Costa.
"Mira Costa is a premiere team,'' Coach Loreen Trevino said. ''We are working towards getting our program up to a level to compete with them. We have to play competitively within ourselves and we're doing that."
Sophomore Kenny Cole led Redondo with a one over par 37 for nine holes, which tied for the low round at Los Verdes Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes.

"Weather wise, it was tough for the first few holes with the fog, but I actually played better at the beginning," Cole said.
Cole, birdied the opening 489-yard par 5, and struggled with a couple short putts, but held his own with the Mustangs.

"I was really happy for Kenny, within his group, he got a one-shot victory over his counterpart at Mira Costa and played a good round all in all," Trevino said.
The low five Redondo golfers carded a combined score of 206, to 192 for Mira Costa.
"It was kind of fun to play in those conditions," Cole said. "I haven't played as well as I'd like during parts of this season, but I'm really looking forward to the post-season."
Freshman Matt Ferradas said he was a bit unprepared for the conditions, but had a decent outing as his putting saved him some shots. He carded a 41, good enough for second on the team.
"I really haven't ever played in wet weather," Ferradas said. "Mentally it was a good experience for me. It's my first season and I'm learning where I need to improve."
The Sea Hawks were not far from their team goal of 200. "If we could get everyone playing well the same day, we could really compete," Trevino said. "This group is young and they have really risen to the occasion maturity wise. They are playing some really good competitors and gaining valuable experience."
Left-handed senior Chris Aguirre shot a 42. Seniors Zach Kano and Spencer Whalen and freshman Ray Malazo followed at 43 and junior George Whitson shot a 44.
The 3,367-yard Los Verdes front nine was playing a little longer with the rain that fell through most of the round.
"Even though this is our home course, it is a tough one," Trevino said. "We need to find consistency on the greens. Putting is really the key for our guys."
The Sea Hawks (3-9 and 2-7 in league) travel to Chester Washington Golf Course on Thursday for another match with Mira Costa.
"We are going to keep it as low as possible, the par there is 34 and so this gives us a chance to get everyone under forty and maybe get a low team score for the year," Trevino said.
