Sea Hawks Get Mater Dei in First Round of CIF

It's a rematch for Redondo Union boys volleyball team, which beat the Monarchs in four back in March.

The Redondo Union High boys volleyball team will head to Santa Ana on Tuesday for a CIF Division 1 first-round playoff match against Mater Dei.

The two schools met earlier in the year at Mater Dei — Redondo was able to pull out a win in four sets.  And Sea Hawks' coach Duncan Avery said that he is very happy with where the team is seeded for playoffs this year.

"We've already seen Mater Dei once. It's tough to pull out two wins in one season against a top team but we have more experienced, older players,'' he said. ''I know they start a few freshman so I think that's where we have the advantage."

Redondo has come off a tough streak against Mira Costa and Palos Verdes but ending Bay League play with a sweep against Peninsula is a great launching pad for this competitive team.

In that match against the Panthers, junior Austin Moore had 16 kills on just 18 swings and Greg Evans added five on just seven swings to lead Redondo Union. The Sea Hawks also got 12 kills from Ryan Olson and nine kills and nine digs from Riley Theunissen.

"Division 1 is a dog fight," Avery said. "There are no scrub teams. We have to have great passing from our outsides and libero. We pride ourselves on being a great serving and passing team, and that's what we have to do."

If the Sea Hawks advance to the second round, they would play the winner of the match between Moore League champion Long Beach Poly and Huntington Beach Edison, the No. 3 team from the Sunset League.
