Sea Hawks Girls Lacrosse Gets No. 1 Seed

Redondo Union, led by a stellar group of seniors, will face a winner of match between Mira Costa and Dunn in the North bracket.

The Redondo Union High girls lacrosse team is ready for the playoffs. Only thing is, the Sea Hawks will have to wait longer than they anticipated.

The seeding for the Northern Division high school girls lacrosse playoffs yielded little surprise. As expected, the undefeated Bay League champion Redondo Union received the No. 1 seed. However, instead of opening the playoffs Thursday at home, at it expected, Redondo Union received a first-round bye and must wait until Saturday.

Additionally, although the Sea Hawks will be the designated home team against the winner of Thursday's first-round playoff game between Dunn and Mira Costa, that second-round game will be played at 1 p.m., at Mira Costa. Redondo Union's home field is unavailable because it will play host Saturday to a state-wide K-9 police competition.

Originally, the Northern Division was to be comprised of a 10-team field. But the stipulation was that qualifying squads had to finish with at least a .500 league record. When only seven teams met that criteria, the playoff pool was reduced and the brackets had to be reconfigured.

Wherever and whoever the Sea Hawks face, Redondo Union co-head coach Tom Borgia said that they will be prepared to play. As of Monday afternoon, Borgia said his players still did not know that they would be opening the playoffs on Saturday instead of on Thursday.

That means it will be eight days since Redondo Union's most recent game, a 22-2, regular-season finale rout of Palos Verdes. Redondo Union concluded the season with a perfect 12-0 Bay League record. Led by 2009 Bay League MVP Meesha Robinson, and a host of experienced four-year seniors players, the Sea Hawks are 15-2 overall.

"We're healthy, willing and raring to go,'' Borgia said. "We'll have some pretty tough practices this week to get ready. I'm sure (the team) will be excited to play.''
