Sea Hawks' Malazo Just Misses Cut at League Finals

Mira Costa's Ryann Ree shoots the low round of 71 in the Bay League finals.

On a beautiful Monday at the Harding Course at Griffith Park, Mira Costa High sophomore Ryann Ree fired the low round with a 71 to advance to the Bay League golf finals. Ree birdied the 18th hole to finish 1-under par, one of five birdies he had during his round.

"My putting was a bit of a struggle, I really hit my iron shots pretty well and it was just a perfect day with the course playing a little shorter without any wind," Ree said.

For Redondo Union High, Ray Malazo was just one shot from advancing to Thursday as he carded a 75. He was joined by teammates Kenny Cole at 83, George Whitson at 85 and Matt Ferradas at 96.

One stroke back of Ree were Mustangs' teammates David Kim and William Chryar, who shot rounds of even-par 72.  Chryar, a senior, rallied on the back nine with a closing 33, to rebound from a three-over 39 on the front.

"William has the potential. He had a bit of an up and down year, but it was a really good one overall and he showed what he's capable of on a really competitive team," Mira Costa coach Bob Timberlake said.

Senior Kyle Nakazaki was the final Mustang golfer to make the cut, with a 73.

"I drove the ball really well," Nakazaki said. "It made up for my putting and iron play, which were not at their best, but I did well enough and we'll see how it goes Thursday."

Nakazaki was joined by Tai Kuida and Jeff Wells from South Torrance at 73. The top 12 individuals advance to play Thursday where they will vie for a top five spot and a berth into the CIF championships later this month.

Chadwick's Mike Stone, Peninsula's Elliot Kim and Trevor Portiz all shot a 74 to qualify for the finals along with South Torrance's Robin Kang, Kevin Kim and G.J. Sanati.

"Today went kind of how I expected. We had some good rounds and we'll just try to carry that into Thursday, which will be a good indicator of what we might be capable of in the team competition coming up," Timberlake said.

Monday's tournament was also the final opportunity for area golfers to earn league honors. The Mustangs' David Kim narrowly edged teammate Kyle Nakazaki for player of the year honors as his 72 gave him a 36.5 stroke average for the season, with Nakazaki coming in at 36.57 after his 73.

Joining Kim and Nakazaki on the All-Bay League First Team were teammates Chryar and D'Angelo. Ree collected second-team honors, giving the Mustangs five players on the All-League Team.
