Surf Report: Waves Show More Energy

There's an increase in energy, but health officials warn people to stay out of the water due to recent rains.

Waking up with the waves on Wednesday, I'm Surf Junkie Jeff with your Redondo Beach Patch surf report.

Well, we're seeing a bit of an increase in the energy out there. Overall, it's hanging on the small to playful side in this neck of the woods.

The conditions are fairly clean early on, with some texture on the surface, but don't be surprised if the wind get on it sooner rather than later!  Taking a look at the waves—there's mainly west-northwest energy and very little southerly swell out there.

That recipe is giving this stretch of sand some racy, drained-out lines, with a few fun, workable corners. The shape should improve once that tide rises.  Most spots in Redondo Beach are seeing knee- to waist-high waves, with the standout combo breaks pulling stomach-high waves, with a few larger sets.

Taking a look at the tides—at 4:51 a.m. it drained out to a -1.6 low, which will have many spots lacking water and seeming inconsistent early to mid-morning. The tide then climbs up to a 4.0 high at 11:20 a.m. before dropping again to a 1.8 low at 4:06 p.m.

If you're planning on paddling, throw on the 3/2 fullsuit, with the water temperature averaging between 58 and 60 degrees. Have fun out there!

Note: County health officials encourage surfers and swimmers to stay out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after a rain due to the possibility of increased bacteria levels, especially near river mouths, storm drains and harbor entrances.
