This Time, Sea Hawks Use Bats to Take Down Leuzinger

Marquez, Jump have three hits as Redondo get out to a 2-0 start in the Bay League.

After pitching stole the spotlight in the league opener, the offense took over Friday as the Redondo Union High baseball team completed a Bay League series sweep of Leuzinger. The Sea Hawks posted their second-highest run total of the season as they defeated host Leuzinger 14-5 in a game called after five innings.

The victory doubles Redondo's league win total of last season and puts the Sea Hawks (9-8, 2-0) in an early three-way tie for first heading into next week's series against defending league champion Palos Verdes.

Daniel Marquez and Chris Jump led the Redondo outburst, each doubling and contributing three of the Sea Hawks' 10 hits. Marquez had a game-high three RBI. Alex Mistuloff added two hits.

Pitching and defensive woes that kept the game tied through four innings were quickly overshadowed for Redondo when the Sea Hawks scored nine runs in the fifth. Alfredo Camacho and Jake Jimenez both reached base twice in the inning in which Redondo sent 14 batters to the plate.

The damage was done on just five hits as Leuzinger committed two errors in the inning, hit two batters and walked three more.

Camacho started the decisive rally with a walk, advanced to second when Jimenez was hit by a pitch, took third on a wild pitch and scored the go-ahead run on an infield single by Travis Fischvogt. Joey Hoy and Jump both padded the lead with two-run singles.

When Mistuloff's potential inning-ending foul popup was dropped, he took advantage of the second chance and singled in the game's final two runs.

Redondo's Shawn Sokolsky was the beneficiary of the big inning. The senior right-hander earned his first win of the season by throwing 2 1/3 shutout innings in relief of Jump. Sokolsky retired seven in a row, including three strikeouts.

Leuzinger starter Eddison Munoz (2-2) went 4 1/3 innings, allowing 12 runs on eight hits and nine walks with three strikeouts.

Redondo, which defeated the Olympians 1-0 on Wednesday, took the initial lead in the rematch with three runs in the second inning. Mistuloff, who had doubled and stole third, scored the game's first run by stealing home.

The Sea Hawks stole home twice in the game, with Marquez also pulling off the feat for the tying run in the fourth inning.

The Olympians (5-11, 0-2) scored two runs on three consecutive two-out hits in the bottom of the second, then took a 5-4 lead when their first five batters of the third reached base and produced three runs.
