Triathletes to Compete in 'Mini Sprint'

The annual Redondo Beach Triathlon is scheduled for Sunday, and up to 700 people are expected to compete.

Up to 700 multisport endurance athletes will descend on Redondo Beach on Sunday to swim, bike, and run as fast as their bodies will allow—all in an effort to turn in the fastest time at the 12th Annual Redondo Beach Triathlon.

The race is billed as a "mini sprint" triathlon because the event distances are significantly shorter than even a typical sprint distance race. The race’s moniker—"Show us your speed"—is an accurate slogan, as many athletes will complete all three disciplines in less than one hour.

Competitors will start with a half-mile swim just north of the Topaz Jetty. After exiting the swim, athletes will enter the transition area next to Veterans Park. The six mile bicycle course, comprised of two loops, will take athletes out to the Esplanade and back down through the Redondo Beach Pier.

After completing the bike portion, competitors will return to transition area, where they will don their running shoes for the footrace finale. The two-mile running loop will take athletes out to Seaside Lagoon and back along Portofino Way.  The race will finish at the historic library steps.

The 700 male and female competitors will be divided into 14 separate age-group divisions. Action will be fast and furious; the winning times in many divisions will come down to a difference of only a few seconds between first and second place.
For those planning on taking in the action, the first wave starts at 7:30 a.m. sharp.
