Video: Tuna Skipping SoCal?

The bluefin tuna bite remains good out of San Diego while albacore show in the Central Coast.

The San Diego tuna bite has been about as consistent as the stock market lately—one moment up and then down again. Sportfishers continue to fish near the floating tuna pens being towed in the waters off Baja California Norte. There has been everything from mediocre fishing to excellent fishing for bluefin tuna in the 12- to 40-pound range.

Light line has given anglers a big advantage when fishing for tuna. 15-pound test with a 20-pound fluorocarbon leader and a good lively bait results in lots more catches. There have also been some big schools of yellowfin and bluefin tuna 150 miles southwest of San Diego. Whether this body of fish will move north is still up in the air at this point.

The Central Coast is seeing some tuna, too, as albacore begin to bite there again. Morro Bay and surrounding areas are starting to catch a few more of the longfin tuna. Albacore all but missed Southern California anglers this year, so many are anxious to see a run of the prized tuna no matter where they show up.

Excellent surf fishing is still the rule from the Mexican border to the Channel Islands. Corbina, barred perch, halibut and some leopard sharks have also been in the mix.
