Video: Tradition Lands Year's 1st Yellowtail

The Tradition lands her first yellowtail for 2012 on a Fishing with Phil trip on Friday before following up with more than 100 barracuda on Saturday.

Phil Friedman Productions was on board the three-quarter-day boat Tradition on Saturday when Robert Westphal from Lawndale landed a 15-pound fork near Rocky Point just off the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

The fish fought hard and ran Westphal into the kelp several times. If not for the expert and hard-working crew on the Tradition, the fish would never have some to gaff.

In addition to the lone yellowtail taken, there were several other fish that broke off or just couldn't be stopped. There was also some good calico bass action and a few sand bass taken earlier in the day.

On Saturday morning, the Tradition had a wide-open barracuda bite. The lucky anglers on board caught more than 100 barracuda with a whole day's fishing yet to come.

"This is sure looking good," said Tradition skipper Steven Konrady. "There has been a ton of life here; it looks like it's finally gone off."
