I was only around this icon a few times. Every time he was the "most interesting man ..."Read More The most engaging guy in the room. His stories were always inspirational. Even though wildly successful he returned phone calls and always answered his own phone. He was incredibly generous to many organizations in the South Bay. Always without hesitation we would donate. I called him a short while ago to speak at our Rotary club. He did not think twice, said absolutely as long as I can bring my wife. We have lost an icon, a South Bay legend. Even though I did not know Bob Meistrell I feel really lucky to have met him.

A few years back, when Body Glove was still on 6th Street in Hermosa, Bob noticed me coming aroundRead More after closing time on several occasions. He asked (with a smile) if I was casing the place. I admitted that I was, in a sense. I was using the buildings in a novel I was writing called, "THE HI-TEC ROCKS." (AMAZON) The compound was destined to become the world headquarters for Turner Sound Systems. He invited me inside and let me look around all I wanted. His only request was that I give him a copy when it was published. Of course I readily agreed. except that it wasn't published until a year ago. I was always intending on sending him the promised payment, but it just didn't seem like something he would remember after all this time. Very sorry I never got around to it.

What a kind, wonderful man! A true Christian, he truly walked the walk! The wonderful stories heRead More told as he Captained his boat! A real loss to all. May the Meistrell Family find comfort in knowing that Bob affected many lives in such positive ways!

The man who died in the Redondo Beach Triathlon this past Sunday, 6-9-13: Michael Giardino. He wasRead More 48. I don't know what it will take to encourage 40-something men not to participate in Triathlons. Being 40-something male, swimming fast in cold water at the start of triathlon races, too often equals heart attack and death; seems on average to be 1 man per triathlon race (sources: newspapers, but not U.S.A. Triathlon who gathers but claims it is their right to keep quiet the official data). Many of these men are in excellent shape, and it is not their first triathlon. But somehow the band plays on. No doubt another 40-something man will die next weekend. His family will be sad, but these races apparently will keep going on. Coming up soon is the 1 year anniversary of my friend, Jason Kirshner's, death (6-24-12 in Ventura). I grew up with him in Rancho Palos Verdes. We were close friends for 30 years. I still miss my dear friend oh so very much ♥. Prayers for the family of Michael Giardino. I am so very sorry.

I lost my husband, a nationally ranked triathlete, while he was on a training ride. Still latchedRead More into his peddles, he hit the ground. Had immediate CPR with no success. He was 50. In tip top shape, he rode his last ride. Yes, he was doing what he loved but I know he would rather be alive to share the success of his daughters & enjoy being Grandpa to his 4 grandchildren. There is a bigger picture! Autopsy proved he had HCM: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, an athete's kiss of death. Condolences to the Giardino family.

Thanks, Mike. Erin's words already were already brave and generous, but her being so close in age toRead More my Mom put them in boldface for me.

Definitely, touching to read about Erin Vidovich and her journey with breast cancer. Sending myRead More heartfelt sympathies to Erin's family, friends and all those lucky to have known Erin. Reason I was very "touched" by this article, I too, was diagnosed stage 3 because of dense breasts (I had an "all clear" mammogram 4 months prior to diagnose). I have a feeling I met Erin at a pre- fashion show (I think it was her) -- we tried on clothes to wear in the fashion show. Sizes were too small for me! We did chat for a short while... Regardless (whether I met her or not), Erin is an inspiration for me, as is her husband -- Erin's story certainly did "touch" my heart/in a way I want to be touched! And to "that college professor" = Erin certainly ended up on the top of her class! I will keep Erin and her family in my prayers and thoughts. Thank you for sharing Erin's story.
Dorothy J. Brooks April 13, 2013 at 09:58 am
...and...in addition to my previous e-mail comment...the "fashion show" (if I did, indeed,Read More meet Erin) needs an explanation (to those thinking breast cancer and a fashion show?) Yes, it was a fashion show for those who had breast cancer to participate in....and I did just spend (after writing my previous e-mail) the last hour reading Erin's "blogs" (never have read a "blog")....I am at a loss for words....the blogs made me smile and then weep at times....I will be keeping Erin in my thoughts for a long time....Erin has definitely touched my heart in a very special way. Got the pleasure of meeting Huell at a UC Davis fund raiser. He was very nice and so funny. We haveRead More a picture we took with him and also he signed a t-shirt we have framed. Almost all our trips are because of him. He helped us learn and love California. RIP Huell.
joebanana March 3, 2013 at 02:55 am
Wow, Huell is so cool. So sad to hear the tragic news, he'll be greatly missed. There will never beRead More anybody as cool as Huell. I hope KCET will keep playing reruns.

One of our family treasures. My daughter, Molly, was unimpressed, however, and did a greatRead More impersonation of his "Hah, Ahm Hoowell Howser, etc." which in turn became a special memory for me. We promise ourselves to visit at least one of his special places.

Chief Nothern was a great man. I was fortunate enough to be a student of his in 2005. He deeplyRead More touched everyone that he was around. If his passing is tearing me apart inside. I can only imagine what his family is going through. I would like to send my deepest, deepest condolences to the Nothern family and his brothers at the RBFD.

tony c August 5, 2012 at 12:04 pm
although I can't make the memorials, my deepest condolences to all his friends and family. IRead More graduated high school with Dickey(as he was known in those days), he was the front man in our rock and roll band,(and he was actually pretty good!), ALWAYS the ladies man, and and always fun to run with. Except when he had that Corvair! He is sorely missed. tony c, chatt., tn

I heard Sally Ride speak at a womens conference and will never forget her sense of humor. SomeoneRead More asked did you get your brains from your father? Her response was... Must have my mother still had hers. RIP
Nancy Wride (Editor) July 24, 2012 at 01:27 am
Linda, I love that. Driving back from the East Division commander Beckman's crime meeting I heardRead More Sally on the radio, recalling how her Dad was a community college president who did not understand what her major, astrophysics, was. But when she became an astronaut, "I solved all of us his problems, because he knew what that was." Thanks for sharing that Linda.
Jim Light July 24, 2012 at 02:40 am
As part of the shuttle launch team for Sally's first flight, it was a very exciting time. We reallyRead More felt like it was history in the making. It is embarrassing to me, that our current astronauts must be launched on Russian rockets. We owe it to pioneers like Sally and to the next generation of Americans to keep the dream alive. Godspeed Sally Ride!

Rachel was a lovely young woman just coming in to her own. A tragic loss for her family and ourRead More community.
Denise A. April 15, 2012 at 12:20 pm
Rachel was beautiful in every way. I've never met someone (let alone at her age) that was so gentle,Read More generous, forgiving, loving, talented and dedicated. In her 18 years, she touched the lives of so many people. Had she lived, there is no doubt Rachel would have accomplished great things.

Nadia Basich March 3, 2012 at 04:26 pm
My name is Nadia Basich. I've known Courtney and Vicki since 3rd grade when we went to MadisonRead More Elementary together. We also went to Adams Middle School and thats when we started to became close and formed our group. It was Me, Courtney, Jorden and Ashley. We hung out everyday at school and after school at Perry Park. High School hit, and Courtney and I went to Redondo High together on the first day of our freshman year. We sorta split off for a while because I was so busy with basketball and she did her own thing. We reconnected junior year and were unseperable. I spent everyday that summer at her house with her and Vicki. We went out a lot on the weekends but it was never a dull moment. Towards the end of that summer her and I got into a stupid fight just like teenage girls would, and stopped being friends. Months later, my friend was with her one night and Courtney told her that she was so sorry for what happened between her and I and wanted to apologize and sort things out but she was scared to talk to me. That was the last time I heard from her. And now this. I feel really guilty and I wished we would of sort things out and became friends again. But Courtney was such a fun girl, all the boys noticed her! She was so gorgeous! She attracted a lot of people and had many friends. As for Vicki, she was so welcoming to any who stepped foot in her house. She was so funny as well. I love and miss u two ladies very much<3

Acknowledgement to Peggy's sister Maureen Duffy and brother coming from the east coast hoping to beRead More appointed as guardians to the kids. Guardianship can be questioned/challenged throughout the age of 18. Please do not give up. One of the key aspects is a sharp, familiar counsel in the juvenile system/Edelman's Court - someone who knows how to handle and manipulate THAT system, THOSE social workers, someone who knows how to PLAY in those courtrooms. The judges ALWAYS side with the county counsel (who is the counsel for the social workers/DCFS). For your peace of minds, let me tell you that they play DIRTY and all of them are paid by the LA county (the judge, the county counsel, DCFS/social workers and all the attorneys who supposedly represent the children, the attorneys who represent parents/guardians. All of these characters "argue each other" from Monday through Friday BUT they play golf together on weekends. You have to go there with your OWN SHARP ATTORNEY. The entire play in those courtrooms is a joke. Please keep in mind about how to eat an elephant ... one bite at a time!

I just found out about her death yesterday and I am completely floored. I always felt for Peggy andRead More her problems with her ex-husband and every day she had to stay on her toes to protect her kids. She had a good heart and cared about people. She was also highly energetic, intelligent - a survivor. I'm totally shocked of her untimely death. I sent her an email a month ago, but there was no response. Now I know why.. You are with God, Peggy, and we will see you in Heaven. I'm keeping your kids in prayer.
