College freshman Rachel Kekauoha, whose parents and brother live in Manhattan Beach, was on her way to Lake Havasu when the SUV she was riding in rolled over several times and she was ejected.
Rachel Kekauoha, a Manhattan Beach resident, 2011 graduate of Mira Costa High School and freshman at Brigham Young University, Idaho, died Friday, April 6 around 3:27 a.m. when she was ejected from the vehicle she was riding in, Manhattan Beach Patch has confirmed. According to Dave Carter of the San Bernardino County Coroner's Office, Rachel was a front seat passenger in a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder SUV whose driver "over-corrected" after the vehicle began to drift off the road. She was not wearing a seat belt, he said. The rollover occurred on Interstate 40 in rural Ludlow, according to Carter. Rachel's father Kelland told MB Patch she was on her way to Lake Havasu. Longtime Coastal Commission Director Peter Douglas, 69, died on Sunday.
Peter Douglas, executive director of the California Coastal Commission, died Sunday, according to the commission's chief deputy, Susan Hansch. Douglas was appointed director of the Coastal Commission in 1985, and stepped down from the post in June of last year. He battled throat and lung cancer in recent years. As authorities prepare their case against the suspect in a Tuesday's double homicide, friends and family are remembering and honoring the victims of the tragedy. Police believe that Jonathan Chacon, 23, killed Vicki Bergman and her daughter, Courtney, early Tuesday morning before fleeing the city. Chacon was arrested in Mexico early Wednesday morning and transferred to the custody of the Redondo Beach Police Department. His arraignment on two counts of murder is set for Friday morning. Police believe that Russell Scott Goldberg, Peggy Goldberg's ex-husband, shot and killed her Wednesday morning. Russell Goldberg fled the state, and he was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the middle of Interstate 15 in Utah after a three-hour standoff. At the vigil, friends and neighbors remembered Peggy Goldberg as a woman who opened her heart to everyone, loved to laugh, and was always upbeat. Singer Whitney Houston died today at the age of 48, the Associated Press is reporting. Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, confirmed the death of the singer Saturday, but did not reveal how or where the six-time Grammy winner had died. According to the Los Angeles Times and the website TMZ, Houston died at the Beverly Hilton hotel. TMZ published a photograph taken Saturday of a police crime lab vehicle outside the hotel. Rachel was beautiful in every way. I've never met someone (let alone at her age) that was so gentle, generous, forgiving, loving, talented and dedicated. In her 18 years, she touched the lives of so many people. Had she lived, there is no doubt Rachel would have accomplished great things.   more ›
