Local Paddles Away With Catalina Crown

Adam Buckley won the 32-mile race to the Manhattan Beach pier on his second try.

The Pacific Ocean has been South Bay native Adam Buckley's playground since the age of 5. And after crossing 32 miles of open surf at the 35th annual Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race on Sunday, using nothing more than his arms to propel forward on a  fiberglass paddleboard, it's safe to say that Buckley felt like a kid all over again. His domination was so thorough that after the obligatory photos and congratulatory hugs, Buckley, 32, took a well-deserved seat on the sand, looked around, and asked if anyone else had finished. The answer was no.  "I was leading from the beginning, coming out of Two Harbors," Buckley said. Beach Cities Weekend: Sidewalk Sales, Outdoor Concerts and a Paddle Board Race

Trying to decide how to spend the last few days before school starts? Here are some suggestions.

Summer doesn't officially end for several weeks, but with school about to start, it's definitely on its last legs. So, how to spend one of the few remaining summer weekends left? You've got your choice of sidewalk sales, outdoor concerts and a paddle board race Sunday morning in Manhattan Beach.  Sidewalk sales Riviera Village and the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce are both conducting sidewalk sales this weekend. Downtown Manhattan Beach merchants began their sale Friday and will resume Saturday. The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. Paddleboarding Makes Waves of Fun

Paddleboarders from around the world gathered at Avenue I in Redondo Beach in July.

Junior lifeguards, veteran paddlers, and competitors from as far away as Australia flocked to Redondo Beach to compete in the 2010 Hennessey's US Paddleboard Championships earlier this month. The event featured bare-hands paddleboarding done in the prone position (alternated with kneeling by some competitors) and paddling done standing up on specialized paddleboards. While the advanced competitors stole the show purely based on performance, the youthful exuberance of first time racers carried the day. "I was really excited; I didn't know I was a paddler--it was kind of a surprise," Zoe Colomer said, bewildered and grinning after winning her first heat.
