Letter: How to Fight Power Plant

Christine Wike offers suggestions for people who don't want the AES power plant to remain in Redondo Beach.

Even though the uses state-of-the-art air pollution control equipment, it emits significant amounts of carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides, reactive gasses and ammonia. It operates at less than 5 percent of capacity, but is still listed as one of the 100 polluters in California (No. 98). This plant operates very little, so you can expect it to move to 30-something on this list if AES Redondo builds a new plant, based on emissions from plants that run frequently. We can stop a new plant from being built and make better use of our waterfront, but we need to act quickly. Here's what you can do: 

1. Write a letter or email (and get family members and friends to do the same) to SACCWIS Member, Joanna Jensen, to let her know that you don't want a power plant on the Redondo waterfront. AES Redondo is surrounded by houses, hotels and senior living, and AES Redondo is in the most densely populated area on the California coast with 13,000 residents per square mile.
