Letter: Power Plant a Major Polluter

The power plant on Harbor Drive is hazardous to the health of Redondo Beach residents, writes Richard Lontia.

Some little known facts about the power plant are:

  1. The L.A.-Long Beach-Riverside area earns the third worst pollution rating in the state, according to the American Lung Association 2012 report.
  2. The new proposed power plant has the estimated capacity to produce 78,500 cars worth of pollution each year—about the number that travel Pacific Coast Highway.
  3. Asthma, heart attacks and even premature deaths can be caused by particulate pollution (PM10/2.5).
  4. The California Energy Commission has final approval authority, even overriding city objections. Does Big Brother breath our air?

So think about a power plant that was built on the ocean front years ago but where the population density has grown to over 13,000 residents per square mile, can add up to 78,500 cars worth of pollution, and provides power to an electrical grid that doesn't need it. Really a bad idea whose time has passed.
