Letter: Power Plant Not Required

Redondo Beach resident Bill Gibbs argues that AES' plans to rebuild its plant disregard residents' rights to health and quality of life.

Dear Redondo Beach Patch:

re: (March 3)

I entirely agree with the above letter from a resident who understands the local health hazard of the AES proposal to triple the toxic emissions in a new power plant on the Redondo waterfront after the state of California notified AES of the decision to decommission the current antiquated facility for non-compliance with environmental statutes.

I became additionally irritated when I tapped on the on Ms. Zaremski's letter and read the far fetched AES company claim that said facility "helps" generate "up to" 8 percent of California's energy needs. What a misleading claim! In point of fact, the AES Redondo power plant last year generated less than one-tenth of 1 percent of the energy for California's electrical power grid. Redondo Beach residents received the airborne power generation pollution emissions while this dribble of electricity is shipped anywhere else in the state.

In fact, a recent study in association with the California Energy Commission has determined that AES Redondo Beach's generating capacity is not required at all as far out as the agency forecasts through 2021!

I join thousands of concerned Redondo Beach residents in opposition to the AES proposal to disregard our constitutional health and quality of life rights in building a new power plant on the Redondo Beach waterfront.

Sincerely,

Bill Gibbs
