Photos: 'No New Power Plant' Rally

South Bay residents gather at Catalina Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway to protest the power plant.

A cacophony of honking horns and yells greeted members of Building a Better Redondo and South Bay residents as they stood at the intersection of Catalina Avenue, Anita/190th Street and Pacific Coast Highway on Saturday to protest AES' plans to repower, or rebuild, its .

Because of new regulations on once-through cooling, the current plant must be decommissioned by 2020; AES seeks to build a new, smaller, more efficient plant in the same location.

Power plant opponents would prefer to see the old plant demolished, and the land converted to a park with limited commercial zoning.

This was the group's fifth protest, and about 70 people attended, according to  Dawn Esser, one of the organizers.
